April 2015 At that point there will be limited spaces available on a first come first served basis so that we can keep a manageable queue We are not taking a waiting list nor registering interest at this time We ll make further announcements in March 2015 in preparation for the first wave of orders in April Last updated 28th October 2014 Simon Wicks Business Development Manager WallaBee simon wallab ee iOS 8 Posted on 2nd June 2014 Hey Everybody As you may know Apple have just wrapped up their keynote at the WorldWide Developer Conference WWDC offering a sneak peek of iOS 8 We usually run into a few issues at this time of year as many of you manage to download a beta version of the next iOS update and then run into problems when apps don t work as you expect Just so you are aware of our position WallaBee will work with iOS 8 when it is released to the public later this year and we are super excited to add a whole host of awesome new features However until then it is completely unsupported If you run into any issues whilst using iOS 8 please do not report them to us via email or in the forums as we will not be fixing any bugs that arise until the Golden Master comes out typically a week before public release The reason for this is that history has taught us that the iOS betas are very very buggy and most of the compatability issues that arise are fixed by Apple later on so it s a waste of our resources to try and make it compatible beforehand On a general note we strongly recommend that you do not install an iOS 8 beta if you are

could spread the load with our set items and free up more of Andy s time to work on unique items The change won t be immediate but you should notice an increase in the number of unique items being produced each week and we are confident that we can clear our backlog over the coming months If you have any concerns or questions about your unique item please contact me directly We ve received a lot of feedback on our unique items over the past months and I can reveal that we are working on some updates to make it easier for players to commission and distribute their items We will also be creating a forum to help those who have commissioned uniques get advice from other players who have already gone through the process to help them get the most from their items I will be posting more updates on this in the future but suffice to say that we know this is an area that we can do better Finally you may have noticed some unique items in our mixing pool recently This can happen when inactive accounts or cheating players are deleted as all of their items inlcuding player uniques are placed in the pool allowing anybody who mixes two mixers to have a chance at finding them Many of you have emailed us recently asking us to retrieve your unique items that have wound up in the pool so we are going to be making a change shortly in order to prevent this from happening If you don t mind if your uniques go into the pool please email support wallab ee From Monday onwards we will automatically be gifting back uniques to players who haven t opted out The House Cup Over the past month the Specky Scarface set has kept you all entertained with the promise of earning a House Cup For those of you that haven t yet been sorted into a house I d recommend you read Dr Miu s original post as the set will be ending shortly the house cup will be awarded 3 hours after it does We have seen some amazing creativity over the past month with regards to the House Cup and I will be showcasing much of it once the competition is over Unfortunately going through the forums to award points has proven to be a huge task particularly with myself being ill and Simon away on honeymoon I shall be going through all of the house forums tomorrow in order to award some bonus points if you are able to post a list of things we should be looking at in your respective forums then that would be much appreciated I think that is all the updates we have to share for now All that remains is to wish you all a very happy Easter weekend You may have noticed our new Store Easter Eggstravaganza as well as a new set Crazy Chicks For those of you wondering what might be coming soon I d remind you of the idiom don t put all your eggs in one basket or should that be one box Ben Dodson CEO WallaBee ben wallab ee Unacceptable Behaviour Posted on 3rd April 2014 I m incredibly irritated that I have to post this update today but recent behaviour in the public areas of the app has become unacceptable In the last 24 hours we ve had new players accussed of being cheaters insults sent via private messaging and some vile language used on the public areas of the game I m going to address each of these issues to let you know what we have done in the short term and to make it clear where we stand on such things Rules We have a very basic and small list of rules You can read them here it ll only take a minute and they are listed within the settings section of the app The very basic version is don t cheat by creating fake account don t cheat by faking your location don t swear in the public areas of the app and don t intimidate harrass or bully any players The penalty for breaking these rules varies depending on the severity whether the player has been warned before and whether or not it is easily irreversible Having spent money in the app or on unique items does not prevent us from banning your account and does not factor into our deliberations when imposing penalties Swearing We do not allow swearing in the public areas forums and story comments of the app The reason for this is that we are a family friendly game and there is no reason for it Today two players decided to launch an unnecessary tirade of insults at other players on a story comment using some incredibly vulgar language As soon as I was made aware of this I put the app into maintenance mode so that I could clear everything up before more players and possibly children saw it Once this was done I went through the accounts of the relevant players and banned them and their devices I have absolutely zero tolerance for that kind of behavior and they have been banned permenantly One of the players had been a WallaBee player for a very long time and had spent a large sum of money in the app as well as having a unique item in the queue to be designed this does not prevent them from being banned and I would warn all players that the amount you ve spent in the game has no bearing on breaches to our rules I will no doubt have to go through a lengthy process with Apple as I m sure the player in question will think this unfair but this is an area I am not willing to budge on paying does not get you special status in my game I

wallab ee v1 3 5 is now available Posted on 7th March 2014 Hey everyone I m happy to announce that v1 3 5 is now available in the App Store Some of you may have already been updated if you are using iOS 7 but we d recommend you go to the App Store to double check This update fixes the following issues Faster image loading We have completely rewritten our image loading code in the app and on our servers From now on all images are distributed across 50 servers worldwide and will be loaded from the nearest one to your location i e if you are in Australia they ll come from a server in Brisbane rather than Chigaco Hopefully you ll notice a vast improvement in speed but please be aware that when you first open the app all imagery will be redownloaded when you first see it This is due to the way that caching works within the app Previously a downloaded image would be stored for 7 days before being redownloaded again but now we store it indefinitely and change the actual address if we need to update an image There are also certain images that don t use this new distribution mechanism such as player avatars set icons and store backgrounds so expect those to be a little slower on first using the update Faster store loading We ve completely rewritten our store loading code and server infrastructure in order to make loading up the store much quicker upto 5x quicker in fact iOS 7 1 compatability fixes We aren t allowed to mention this on the App Store update notes as iOS 7 1 isn t available yet but we ve made some fixes to improve performance for those players already using a beta version and to fix issues we expect to appear in the public version that will be available later this month App Review We used to put up a notice when you d used the app a few times to ask for you to leave a review on the App Store We no longer do this and instead have a direct link to the App Store within settings Your reviews on the App Store are one of the best ways to help us attract new players so if you have the time to leave a review we d really appreciate it If you have any issues with the update please can you first of all open up the settings section in the app and check that it says v1 3 5 at the bottom Apple sometimes has a few issues with updates during the first 24 hours of a release and you can sometimes update only to find you have the old version If you are sure you have the right version then a quick restart of your device will generally fix most problems and I strongly recommend doing this after updating the app As I mentioned all images in the app will need to reload when you first try and look at them so expect to see a few image loading spinners when you first start using the update but hopefully you ll notice things will be far quicker during an item release Speaking of item releases we re going to give everybody some time today in order to update and so we can make sure there are no unforeseen issues this has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that South Park The Stick of Truth was released today and our team will be otherwise engaged Item releases will resume from 9pm GMT today March 7th this does not mean an item will be released at that time just that there will be nothing before that time On behalf of my team and I we hope this new update helps alleviate some of the recent issues during item releases If you run into any problems please don t hestiate to contact me Ben Dodson CEO WallaBee ben wallab ee v1 3 5 v1 4 and v2 Posted on 3rd March 2014 During the release of our The WallaBees 2014 set last night we experienced some serious issues which prevented many of you from accessing the app and led to extreme timeouts and frustration I ve completed my review of what went wrong and I ll try to explain that along with what we are planning to do about it I would strongly recommend that all players read this post as there are wide reaching changes which will effect everybody The reason for the downtime yesterday was due to the way we load images within the app Over the past couple of months we have been working on speeding this up and have invested heavily in servers to cope with the demand and size of our image assets Unfortunately some issues with redirections in the app meant that all API calls were blocked until images were downloaded As an example if you loaded up the set page for The WallaBees 2014 your app would need to download 6 images which would then prevent other people from connecting until they were downloaded We fixed this by preventing all images from loading which meant that everybody could then use the app again and it was as fast as it should be but obviously this is far from

so far You can compare yourself with other players Simon is beating me search for specific items and use a map tool to see all of the items that are near you WallaBounce A native iOS app that does one thing very well finding a specific numbered item You can use it to try and find the elusive items you are looking for or you can use it to see where your items go when you recycle them NewItems A Twitter account that tweets whenever a new item is released It will also alert you when a new set is introduced and the various name changes they go through WallaBeeTracker Another Twitter account this one feeds from the ItemBrowser TrackerBee and shows you all the latest changes to the our items This includes new items price changes and alterations to the foraging categories WallaBee 101 Whilst it doesn t use our APIs in any way we wanted to give an honourable mention to chrisirmo for creating this incredibly helpful guide for new players It will walk you through how everything in WallaBee works from foraging to selling on the Market And so concludes our list of awesome apps that our players have created on top of our APIs I d like to thank all of the developers who have embraced our API it really is great to see so many useful tools being built on top of our data If you re working on a new tool let us know and we ll help publicise it once it s ready for primetime Ben Dodson CEO WallaBee ben wallab ee Privacy Friends and Activity in WallaBee 2 0 Posted on 5th January 2014 Hey Everyone Later this year we ll be releasing version 2 0 of WallaBee our biggest update yet containing a whole new user interface and a rewrite of all of our syncing technology We re very excited about the changes we are going to be implementing and over the course of the year I ll be posting updates on changes we re making and new features we are adding Today I d like to talk about privacy friends and activity When WallaBee version 1 0 was first released things were very different There was no trading no forums and no commenting on activity which was entirely text based We had two modes of privacy protection which have remained the same hide location which enables you to stop other players seeing your exact location and hide profile which makes you completely invisible Privacy has always been one of our top priorities but changes to the way the game works more of an emphasis on social play and some players abusing the current system means we are ready for a change Activity At present we have activity on a per player basis per item basis and a per place basis as well as activity lists for hot activity your friends and nearby players In WallaBee v2 we are changing the activity page to include All Following and Hot All activity feeds are self updating so you no longer need to pull to refresh and due to changes in our privacy settings the All activity literally shows you everything that is going on in real time it looks amazing during an item release Friends One of the biggest changes is that we are removing the concept of friends At present you have to be friends with somebody to send them a message or a trade request but we think there are better ways of doing this which I ll come to shortly Instead we ll be using a following and follower system which I m sure you are familiar with in other apps you can follow other players and players can follow you You ll be able to view the activity of people you follow in a dedicated activity feed and depending on players privacy settings you might need to be followed by somebody before you are able to message comment on their activity or trade with them When we release v2 we will automatically ensure that you are following all of your existing friends and they are following you Communication Preferences As it stands only friends can message and trade with you but anybody can comment on your activity This causes a few issues as several players have reported that some number collecting players they aren t friends with will constantly harrass them by commenting on their activity Our push notification system is an all or nothing proposition at the moment i e if you want new item alerts you ll get comment alerts message alerts friend request alerts and trade request alerts in v2 you can customise each of these so many of these harrassed players have taken to switching on hide profile just to avoid being messaged This doesn t sit well with us and so we are adding the following fine grained controls Private Messages You can choose to allow messages from everybody from people you follow or from nobody Trade Requests You can choose to allow trade requests from everybody from people you follow or from nobody Activity Comments You can choose to allow anybody to comment on your activity only people you follow to comment on your activity or allow nobody to comment on your activity Blocking The one caveat to the rules above is that we will allow you to block players in WallaBee v2 The way this works is that you can go to a player profile and choose block once that is done they won t be able to message you trade with you or comment on your activity However they will still be able to see your activity and you will still be able to see theirs in the global stream You can always choose to unblock players and the setting works with all of the fine grained controls above so for example you could allow messaging and trading only from people you follow but allow anybody to comment on your activity apart from people you have blocked Anonymous Profiles The big change we are making to our privacy settings is that we are abolishing the hide profile option With the communication preferences we re adding plus the ability to block there should be no reason to completely hide a profile from public view This means that all activity will be visible on all items and that every number can be seen in the global activity feed For example at the moment somebody with a hidden profile getting a 1 item means that the 1 never shows up in the hot activity feed in v2 all activity is visible With deleted accounts we currently set them to be hidden profiles which is why you ll notice some activity missing if you get an old item from the mixing pool in v2 this changes as the account will simply show up as Deleted Account so that you can still see all of the activity Hide Location We are not making any changes to the hide location feature We hold a lot of information about your location and we are dedicated to keeping this secure and only revealing your location to other players if you want to By way of a brief recap hiding your location means that your exact location is never shown in place related activity If you forage at your local grocery store the icon for a grocery store will be shown but the name is not revealed and tapping will not take you to the place page If you try and drop an item you will be warned that doing so will compromise your location privacy as somebody picking up the item at the location would be able to see you dropped it there and thus know you were at the location If you drop a locked item we don t give you a choice between making the item public or hidden it is automatically hidden None of these features are changing in version 2 0 Migration So how will all of these changes happen Version 2 0 will be a free update on the App Store and when you update you ll be walked through some of the changes we ve made new players will be given a tutorial and fuller walkthrough One of the first things you ll be able to do is to change your player name At present we don t allow you to change your name and we aren t altering that policy mainly because it can be abused you can request a change by emailing support However our rules on valid player names have changed so some of you will need to be renamed at this point i e we will not allow players to have emoji characters in their player names from v2 onwards for several technical reasons Once you ve gone through updating your player name if you want to we will check your existing privacy settings If you have hide location enabled this will remain and work exactly as it does now your location is never revealed and any locked items you drop are automatically hidden If you have hide privacy enabled we will briefly recap the above and let you know that hidden profiles are no longer allowed You will be given the option to continue playing in which case your profile and activity will be visible or the option to delete your account There will be a 1 month window from the release of version 2 0 for players to choose between making their profile public or deleting their account once that month is up we will automatically make all hidden activity public All players who have hide profile enabled will be emailed about this twice during the one month transition period so that everybody is aware of the change The final step will be to show you the communication preferences we have set for you and allow you to change them By default they will be set so that you can only receive messages and trades from people you follow but anybody can comment on your activity If you had a hidden profile previously all communication preferences will default to nobody Conclusion We have taken player privacy incredibly seriously from day one and will continue to do so The changes we are making have been meticulously planned in order to improve the player experience for everybody whilst providing you with more fine grained controls so you can customise who can contact you I anticipate there will be much debate about the changes I ve listed and would encourage anybody with a strong viewpoint or questions to contact me directly I will of course reply to any comments here as well Happy foraging Ben Dodson CEO WallaBee ben wallab ee Disclaimer WallaBee version 2 0 also known as v2 is a work in progress with no set release date save for 2014 The changes listed above are proposed changes and may not be exactly as described when the final product is released Clean Up On Aisle 3 Posted on 2nd January 2014 Most days I love my job When people say what do you do I can point at Sarah Jurassica Parka and say I let people collect dinosaurs in jackets on their phones However the bad side is when I let my players down and have to write an apology blog post I was hoping with the updates I mentioned yesterday I would have put these blog posts behind me but unfortunately we had some issues today during the release of the Gnome Cubimal As ever I ll be as frank with you as possible and explain exactly what went wrong how we ve fixed it and how we re going to improve As you know we bought online a massive new database server yesterday which appeared to be working well Unfortunately despite clear instructions on the configuration for said server our hosting company set it up with a basic config which meant that less than 0 2 of its power was used during the last drop and connections were backed up in a massive queue As soon as the issue was identified we jumped onto a conference call with our tech team running the servers in Chicago and were able to get a new configuration loaded and the databases rebooted so that everything ran smoothly This also means the issue is now completely solved and won t happen again It is my belief that it isn t right to pass the blame if you were trying to buy an item or load the app you don t care if WallaBee are at fault or the servers they use as they are one and the same to you I take full responsibility for this issue as I should have personally checked each and every piece of configuration to make sure it was done correctly We have taken some actions from our side to ensure that this doesn t happen again and we are working with our hosting partners to correct the mistakes that have been made To answer some specific questions I ve received in the past 20 minutes Why can t you test this stuff before you go live There is no easy way to test the immense load that a new item release generates in WallaBee Yesterdays migration was fairly straightforward as the successfull configuration we were using throughout December should have been copied over to our more powerful dedicated hardware unfortunately due to an internal issue this didn t happen Whilst we could commission hundreds of bots to test new servers before they are released the cost would be astronomical due to the number required so it just isn t financially viable for us as a small startup Why couldn t you open up more checkouts In my blog post yesterday I made the analogy of a shop with a warehouse database and a series of checkouts web servers when load is heavy we open up more checkouts In this case we had plenty of servers provisioned and running but the issue was with a misconfiguration on our database server If you take the supermarket analogy we had a massive warehouse ready to go but only one temp worker who had no idea what they were doing trying to deal with 1000s of requests for goods You say shouldn t happen again a lot Are you sure this time We know exactly what caused this issue and we have solved it I can t promise that other issues won t pop up in future but as soon as we solved this misconfiguration everything started to run smoothly Why don t you communicate better when things go wrong Whenever something goes wrong we would urge you to take a look at our status page at http status wallab ee this is held on different servers with a different host in a different country and will always be updated by us when something goes wrong As I am the only developer it is more prudent when something goes wrong for me to update that page and then get onto fixing rather than replying to tweets and emails I will reply to everybody that messaged us once this post is live Can you give me the item number I should have got when I hit buy Due to the optimisations we added a while back the Store is downloaded to your device every 10 minutes and then can run without an internet connection this is to stop too many requests to our servers A side effect of this is that when things go wrong the Store will gladly tick over and look fine so a lot of you will have seen the Gnome Cubimal in the Store and hit purchase only for it to time out Unfortunately we have no way of knowing who hit the button when as none of those requests were successful so we can t give you an item at a specific number or change any of the existing ones The issues affected all players equally so if you weren t in the first few people to press the button or the first few after the issue was solved then you won t have received the item Why didn t you halt the item release Our usual policy when something goes wrong is to throw up the maintenance window to avoid further frustration yes a maintenance message is annoying when you ve just got a new item message but not as frustrating as seeing it pressing buy and then nothing happening The reason I didn t do this was because I wanted the server to remain at its current load whilst our tech team looked at what was wrong if I hadn t made that decision the load on the database would have dropped and the misconfiguration would not have been spotted If you have any questions that aren t listed here please email me directly and I ll be happy to answer and update this page At this point I would usually thank you for your ongoing patience but I m keenly aware that patience may be starting to wear thin Whilst I m confident we have
