are considering that self driven vehicles are smart and can communicate with environment so all the area left outside islands boundaries is meant to be used by both people passing by and self driven car While developing aggregative logic of island structure we made a pattern of them and calculated negative space needed for intensive car traffic Second scheme represents dynamic movement and leads every vehicle to the centre of junction from which car traffic is distributed equally to main strelets Pärnu st Mere av Narva st By combining those two patterns we gained a system of circular shaped islands Circular isles become dense on the sides of streets and rare on the middle axis of the street In this way self driven cars mostly take the route in the middle while sides of the streets are generally used by pedestrians Every circular island can hold a different function This manner provides a complex public space which can be used in different ways public environmental social cultural entertainment Anything from music concerts to ice and snow exibition in winter System of islands serves city with important public functions in the most active parts of the city and green areas on less used traffic roads and junctions We have created a future intersection where public space is handed for randomness green living and constantly renewable ambitions Squares symbolic significance of this proposal lies in the algorithms and patterns which provides a plenty of choices for the road users and endless growth of structure with best adaptation to the environment public needs and most of all changes glorious algorythms Töö pakub välja lahenduse milles isejuhtivate autode tulekuga kaasnev avalik ruum on reorganiseeritud saarestikuna projekt kasutab võrgustikku mis on kombineeritud haljastusega Selliselt organiseeritud ruum võib kujuneda uue liikuvusmudeli sümbolruumiks väikestest omavahel vastastiksuhetes olevatest

s hanseatic core self driven cars now move quietly efficiently and effortlessly throughout the city on their narrow paved tracks The former noise of traffic replaced with the quiet sound of grasses and wildflowers as they gently brush the vehicle s chassis the new urban experience akin to an enjoyable drive along a country lane The city streets are given back to nature and its enjoyment Former road maintenance funds can now be spent on cultivating micro adapted meadows small forested glades and understory plantings where the shadows of buildings deem viable Pedestrians use the existing sidewalks and safely cross at paved intersections Cyclists are given an entire network of dedicated lanes alongside sidewalks no longer in competition with the auto The self driven car s efficiency becomes nature s freedom The streets of the new town become a connected network of green infrastructure park corridors At Viru Square a new plaza forms the focal point its longitudinal geometry connecting to the medieval urban fabric of walkable narrow streets its length playing homage to the height of the iconic modernist Viru Hotel its width remembering the now meadow covered right of way of its main roadways and its angle aligned with Tallinn s new contemporary development A single primary pedestrian line marks the north south direction indicating the importance of the square as the epicenter of Tallinn This new square completes the triad of Vabadus väljak with its blue tinted paving the black cobble of Reakoja plats and now Viru väljak to be paved in white limestone The city s dramatically altered mobility which has now given over the roadway to a connected ecological infrastructure a mixture of meadows is certain to ensure Tallinn as the European Green Capital Analoogne töö Giant Footprindiga kuid on muljetavaldav oma totaalsuses Töös on

The new square is now edged with four focal objects towering Viru Hotel and the entrance to the Viru Center in the east former firehouse in the west Metroplaza in the north and high treefront of the Tammsaare park in the south Transportation corridors are reduced to only one unified tram bus and taxi lanes and one bidirectional car lane on Pärnu and Narva roads and on Mere boulevard The pavement and driving area have been brought together to one level which is also the principle that expands all over Tallinn Old Town The air space has been cleaned from all obstructions wires and electricity cables that would interrupt the unobstructed view to the sky or to the higher horizont Viru Square is also a good landing space for drones Usage of the square The aim is to create a space with universal usage that could be used in all occasions Depending on a season insident or purpose the use of the square can be modified with displaceable city furniture lightning posts and driveway marking boarding posts that can be hidden under the surface All this creates an opportunity to organize events of different formats and scales The square is characterized by lots of sunlight except for the front area of former firehouse that stays in the shade in the afternoon Sunshine determines the usage of the place durning the day Reconstruction of the square gives opportunity to take in use the underground floor below the square Maybe it is a place for an automatic data center of selfdriving cars or as an usual subway market or something else The influence area of the Viru Square also affects park Tammsaare which therefore in the future will have to accommodate more people and specially children The design of Viru square The square has been designed to constantly change The initial state of the square marked with its surface pattern is restored whenever there is no event going on on the square The influence lines marking the nodal points of different activities and densify in places where people rarely stop The nodal points mainly are illuminated areas with city furniture hang out places city stage or outdoor exhibitions Viru Square at night The main night time attraction is a laser light pointing from the center in to the sky The verge of the square is preseved for shopping chilling and dining areas that help keeping the activity in Viru square alive till early night hours The square seems to expand inside the edging buildings in to their semi public zones After most places close and only some stay open those who can not sleep can hang around in Viru square Moving trough the square at night opens an opportunity to enjoy an urban art experience presented on the spot The area is not polluted with lightning Small light islands sourced by LED lights on top of fiberpoles that swing in the wind and resemble to an urban cryptogam rather create a cozy

every intersection no matter how much traffic lanes are intersecting In that way there is no traffic jams and for the first time city can narrow car roads leaving more space for pedestrians and bicyclists We call our intersection concept model the SUPERLOOP It is extreme superelevated roundabout with capability of supporting vehicles moving with speed up to 150km h or possibly even faster But Superloop is more than just a roundabout Most of the intersections in the city have unused space above them Half of them also have unused space beneath We propose to use this space for recreation above the intersection level and for car parking beneath ground In this way Superloop can replace parking spaces that are otherwise distributed around the city and add more recreation space Intersection becomes safer for pedestrians and bicyclers allowing them to cross it without interacting cars Every Superloop can be equipped with car parking lots beneath it If vehicles are autonomous they would drop passengers off at destination travel to closest Superloop and park there by itself The core of the Superloop is filled with accumulators that collect energy from solar panels We can use this energy to charge electric cars parked beneath Solar panels are placed above recreation space Recreation space above also protects roads from weather precipitation As in this particular intersection there are exchange of two different transports trams and cars we move nearest tram stops to the middle of the Superloop From these stops there are stairs and three elevators that lead to the top recreation place There are standard horizontal traffic lane for heavy trucks and busses placed right next to vertical superelevated lane The inspiration for this concept comes from a motordrome a carnival sideshow featuring a silo or barrel shaped wooden cylinder ranging from

The history of Viru square is diverse and it can partly be seen in buildings around the plaza Buildings represent different decades and phases in Tallinn history However the plaza itself does not represent the history of Viru Square or the Tallinn of today As an important intersection point Viru square has potential to become a lively focal point of the Tallinn of today The aim is to make the area more pedestrian friendly green and create space for social gathering Self driven cars require less space and part of the currently used car traffic areas will be released for other purposes The current driveway in front of Metro plaza is directed behind the building so the front can be used for common recreation and lounging The atmosphere of the new plaza is inviting active and the history of Viru Square is visible among the modern day life The new Viru Square serves again as one of the most important city squares in Tallinn Café seating areas info desk bouldering wall seating lawn urban greenery and art pieces make the square an urban living room for both local people and visitors so that Viru Square becomes a HOTSPOT of Tallinn again HOTSPOT Place for gathering and connecting Active city life Culture and art Landmark Intersection point Source of information History meets modern life Inviting atmosphere Place for small events Urban greenery GATHERING Places for seating and relaxation Café Playground Bouldering wall Place for events Market booths Info desk Slanted lawn towards the sun CONNECTING New pedestrian connections New bikeway Public transport Market square and old town Urban green areas Töö puhul on tegemist primitiivselt vormistatud ning madalakvaliteediliselt tehtud tööga milles esitatud disain on pealiskaudne Samas on töös hea liikluslahenduse idee mida Tallinnas Viru ringi kontekstis veel pakutud ei ole ringtee

objective is to add variety with means of transport provide electric city cars and bikes to rival with the existing car emphasized traffic culture The shift from one mean of transport to another is made more fluent by introducing a new tram stop and placing city cars and bikes in the immediate surroundings All fixed structures are placed so that when not in active use the square remains fairly neutral yet dynamic and balanced between urban functions greenery and open space Aim is to stitch together the urban tissue while protecting the historical and cultural assets The square is given a new order of priority which focuses on the experience of a pleasant visit and stay rather than on traffic efficiency and parking spaces Dynamics and liveliness is introduced by mixing the traffic flow of the square and assembling the people there rather than dispersing them The square is at the same time compact and complex Our project has a haptic tone and defining the areas relies on subtle treatment of surfaces The square provides easy access to a wide range of infrastructural facilities by foot Tram line remains in the square and cohabits the pedestrian area Guiding surfaces alert the pedestrian when moving from full pedestrian area to the combined pedestrian and vehicle area Undulating surface guides drivers subtly to stay within safe speed Self driving cars are programmed to react accordingly to the changing surface structures We want to introduce a new Viru square of the people user friendly day and night hosting cultural events in as many venues and spaces as possible morning to evening musical entertainment in outdoor spaces late night shopping pop up venues good food stalls independent retail as well as chains museums shops and restaurants supporting a diverse and vibrant local culture and
