  • The Artist - Official Competition EurAsia - PÖFF
it is the most unlikely of feel good movies George Valentin Dujardin is at the height of his powers in 1927 when he meets the vivacious and warm hearted Peppy Miller Bejo who is trying to break into the movies through work as an extra In a plot similar to A Star Is Born and Singin In The Rain as Peppy Miller s star is in the ascendance as the studios look for new fresh new talent with nice voices so George s career dips The Wall Street crash arrives only to seal his fall from popularity as he invests all of his money in an overblown silent African adventure film Tears Of Love Sound does briefly and engagingly dip into the film In an amusing dream or nightmare for him scene George imagines the sudden appearance of sound in the studio as suddenly he can hear voices and winces as even a feather falls to the floor In the very final scene there is the briefest moment of dialogue Hazanavicius manages to give the film a real sense of charm and warmth and film fans will be competing to spot visual and musical references Mark Adams Screen International Michel Hazanavicius b 1967 Paris began his career in television at the TF1 network then veered into advertising He is best known for his spy movie series parodies Oss 117 2006 2009 both of which star Jean Dujardin who won the best actor prize at Cannes this year for his performance in THE ARTIST Filmography La classe américaine 1993 co dir Mes amis 1999 Oss 117 Le Caire nid d espions Oss 117 Cairo Nest of Spies 2006 Oss 117 Rio ne rõepond plus Oss 117 Lost in Rio 2009 The Artist 2011 Tags drama human relations humour silent film Comments

  • Las Acacias - Screen International Critics' Choice - PÖFF
tender road movie infused with a subtle sense of loss and loneliness LAS ACACIAS marks an assured and gently beguiling first feature from writer director Pablo Giorgelli The slow burning pace and modest nature of the story may not be to all tastes but Giorgelli rewards the viewer with a film whose warm humanity should allow it to connect with a general audience The strength of LAS ACACIAS lies in its simplicity and acutely observed range of easily recognisable human emotions Ruben German de Silva is a truck driver transporting lumber between Asuncion del Paraguay and Buenos Aires He has agreed to take a passenger Jacinta Hebe Duarte who arrives burdened with bags and a cute five month old baby Anahi Nayra Calle Mamani who steals the audience s heart in much the same way as she charms Ruben Small acts of kindness and stolen glances gradually ease the initial discomfort between a weary Ruben and a wary Jacinta and as the journey continues it s providing little telling details on the son that the stoical Ruben hasn t seen in eight years and Jacinta s circumstances Giorgelli shows a great deal of confidence in his refusal to overstate the emotional stakes or sweep the story towards unnecessary melodrama The carefully nuanced central performances convincingly suggest the blossoming affection between Ruben and Jacinta with the smallest gesture and slightest glance In its best moments of quiet contemplation and piercing emotion LAS ACACIAS ultimately earns its place in a humanist tradition that stretches from Renoir to Ray and beyond Allan Hunter Pablo Giorgelli Pablo Giorgelli b 1967 Buenos Aires studied film direction at the Universidad del Cine LAS ACACIAS which won the Caméra d Or at the Cannes Film Festival is his first feature film Filmography Las Acacias 2011 Tags road
