well people you don t know That way you ll come up with new angles and more interesting ideas Alternatively when you register your think tank enter the number of friends who will take part as the size of the group then enter their names All the places will be reserved for your group immediately How is a coordinator different from a facilitator A coordinator like a host invites people to a party and ensures that it is organized and goes successfully In this context he or she is a local person who will also choose the initial discussion topics A facilitator is someone who has undergone special training in the open space method to lead the think tanks inspire the brain trust the participants and summarise the outcome Neither the coordinator nor the facilitators decide what questions inspired by the topic are raised and answered you do that yourselves What s the difference between official independent and virtual think tanks Official think tanks those being led by trained facilitators according to a suggested format based on open space technology Independent think tanks those without trained facilitators where the format is decided by the organizer coordinator of that particular think tank An independent think tank is one you set up with your neighbours or colleagues for example and to which you invite others to participate Virtual think tanks those designed for people who for whatever reason can t physically attend the events Virtual think tanks also must be registered including a suggested location for the forum or Skype chat address et al you want to use Questions about think tanks How does the thinking part work The think part of the think tanks is based on the open space method adapted especially for My Estonia where the questions that the participants the brain trust discuss are raised by the participants themselves The thinking takes place in small discussion groups There s nothing you need to do to prepare everything is explained and initiated by the facilitator What time do the brainstorming bees begin and end Idea workshops are open on May 1st from 10 00 a m to 3 00 p m Click here for a detailed description of the day s activites What s the open space method Many of us have been at conferences where the real energy and best exchanges of ideas happened during the coffee break Open Space began as an experiment to make the whole conference as productive as one large carefully crafted but free flowing coffee break Used globally it s been wildly successful The method is reminiscent of the practice of ancient native peoples all around the world who sat together in a circle to seek solutions to problems which needed immediate attention It worked A man named Harrison Owen began to re imagine that process in 1985 initially re inventing business conferences Since then Open Space Technology has inspired tens of thousands of people to resolve challenging problems in large corporations and social organizations of all sizes and purposes Its central principle is entrusting responsibility to the participants and their passionate concerns Veterans of the method say that the greatest result is in opening people s minds eradicating scepticism and hostility and of course generating good ideas that can take off Who came up with the 18 topic areas The topics were mapped out by social scientists to provide focus for the day and to address a wide spectrum of issues facing the people of Estonia However they are only a starting point the questions you decide to discuss will be those you raise yourself at the think tanks In the open space method you are responsible for addressing issues that are important to you and for finding potential solutions to them Why are topics already provided To start people thinking and to draw people with similar interests to a particular think tank However the local topic is an open one designed to sort out issues of local importance You are welcome to raise your own concern as a question find like minded people to join in and start your own discussion group Are the think tanks only open to brainy people Anyone is welcome to take part in the think tanks regardless of age social background education or language No one is expected to be armed with extensive facts and figures they have researched or put together The best solutions are those that people come up with together through synergy For every topic you can raise questions at the local or country wide level It s up to you to decide which issues are the most pressing and closest to your heart You mean I don t have to prepare for the think tanks Only if you have a clear question you want to raise that might benefit from a little research For example if it s an old issue in your town you could find out what s been done to solve it what the results were what hasn t been done and what s prevented resolving the problem You also might want to think about your proposed solution and how it would work The clearer the question is to you the better the ideas you will generate in discussing it with others Can those who can t get out of their homes also share their ideas with the think tank people Yes Virtual think tanks have been created for this very purpose But we encourage you to think of neighbours without internet access too There s no reason why a group from an apartment for example can t meet share concerns and ideas and pass them along to a wired neighbour or family member How many ideas do we need We ll come up with as many ideas as we come up with What s important is that we can implement them to make life in Estonia even better What happens to the ideas we come up with The
