    Op 108 Šostakovitš Symphony No 5 in D minor Op 47 Martin Kuuskmann bassoon USA Estonian National Symphony Orchestra Conductor NEEME JÄRVI The soloist in Eino Tamberg s Bassoon Concerto is Martin Kuuskmann one of the most versatile bassoon soloists at present Born and grown up in Estonia he has been working mainly in the US for years His repertoire includes music from baroque to jazz and an essential place in it belongs to present day music not only Eino Tamberg but also Erkki Sven Tüür Tõnu Kõrvits Christopher Theofanidis Gene Pritsker Charles Coleman Gregor Hübner and David Chesky have written bassoon concertos for him Chesky s Bassoon Concerto performed by Kuuskmann on the CD Urban Concertos Chesky Records 2007 received a Grammy Nomination in 2007 for the best contemporary composition With his magnificent technique musicality and courage of experimentation Martin Kuuskmann has proved that the bassoon can be a top calibre solo instrument Eino Tamberg s Bassoon Concerto with its fiery technique is very rhythmical and still one of the most melodious and extensive bassoon concertos ever written One can always find something new in it as soon as you have found a solution for yourself ever new variants

    60th birth anniversary of Peeter Lilje 13 Oct 1950 28 Oct 1993 a long time principal conductor of ERSO A remarkable place in his repertoire belonged to more than 30 large scale vocal symphonic compositions Brahms Berlioz Orff Verdi and extensive dramatic symphonies Beethoven Brahms Tchaikovsky Sibelius etc Brahms s German Requiem which was performed under his conduction for the first time in Estonia on 29 October 1981 received recognition from both the audience and the critics It is not always possible to see and hear P Lilje so open and emotional the audience tried to respond in the same vein Tallinn s concert going public appreciated the Estonian premier of Brahms s German Requiem greatly the hall was filled to capacity and applauded enthusiastically Ines Rannap Sirp ja Vasar 12 Nov 1981 Peeter Lilje cooperated most closely with the pianist Kalle Randalu My first appearance with the orchestra was with Peeter Lilje and ERSO In spring 1975 when graduating from Tallinn Music High School I played the first movement of Beethoven s Fourth Piano Concerto Our last performance together was that of Grieg s Piano Concerto in Kuopio Finland This was in October 1993 These years included a great

    of which Brovtsyn had just received the gold medal at the competition of Guildhall Music and Drama School A lot of depth could be felt in Brovtsyn s interpretation and his natural way of playing and phrasing offered the listeners many enjoyable moments Vahur Luhtsalu Sirp 4 Feb 2005 The most significant among his numerous victories at competitions is the first place at Tibor Varga International Violin Competition in Switzerland Boris Brovtsyn has cooperated with many conductors including Yuri Bashmet Gerd Albrecht Marek Janowski Louis Langrée and performed as a soloist with orchestras like Orchestre Philharmonique de Strasbourg Orchestre National de Lille Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte Carlo BBC Philharmonic etc The orchestra is conducted by young Finnish conductor Eva Ollikainen winner of the international Jorma Panula conducting competition 2003 who is widely appreciated in the Nordic countries Despite her young age she maintains a regular relationship with such orchestras as Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Swedish Radio and Iceland Symphony Highlights of recent seasons have included performances with Deutsches Symphonie Orchester Berlin London Symphony Orchestra Brussels Philharmonic and New Japan Philharmonic In 2008 Ollikainen made her debut in the Royal Swedish Opera with Ravel s L Heure Espagnole and Stravinsky s Nightingale

    Shostakovich Symphony No 4 in C minor Op 43 Maxim Shchura piano Estonian National Symphony Orchestra Symphony Orchestra of the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre Conductor PAUL MÄGI The young pianist Maxim Shchura has taken the main prizes from several competitions the most prestigious of which are Steinway Klavierspiel Wettbewerb Hamburg 2004 and the 7th competition of Estonian pianists Tallinn 2008 In the previous year he performed as a soloist with ERSO even twice earning praise for Prokofiev s Third Piano Concerto and Mozart s Concerto for three pianos The traditional joint concert of ERSO and the Symphony Orchestra of the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre will feature Dmitri Shostakovich s Fourth Symphony The orchestra is conducted by Paul Mägi principal conductor of Uppsala Chamber Orchestra and Symphony Orchestra of the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre During the last rehearsals of the Fourth Symphony late in 1936 the then director of Leningrad Philharmonic summoned Shostakovich and said that if that piece were performed in public he would be dismissed from the post of director Thereupon the composer ordered to withdraw the symphony and it premiere took place as late as in 1961 a quarter of a century
