    Brahms concert series 4th concert of the MASTERCLASS series Halvorsen Bergensiana rococo variations on an old melody from Bergen Halvorsen Fossegrimen Suite Op 21 Brahms Symphony No 2 in D Major Op 73 Ragnhild Hemsing Hardanger fiddle Estonian National Symphony Orchestra Conductor NEEME JÄRVI The rich fresh and bright heritage of Johan Halvorsen 1864 1935 a very prominent Norwegian violinist in his time is still not well known it has even been succinctly called one of Norway s best kept secrets Now it is introduced to the Estonian audience by Neeme Järvi who with Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra has already released three collections of Halvorsen s orchestral music under the label of Chandos The suite named after Fossegrimen the mythological water spirit and violin virtuoso features the Norwegian folk instrument Hardanger fiddle Norwegian hardingfele an instrument whose history dates back to nearly half a millennium and which is used mainly on the shores of Hardanger Fiord in Central Norway The usually very richly ornamented instrument looks very much like the classical violin Instead of four the Hardanger fiddle has eight or nine strings in two layers The four upper ones are played with the bow like the classical violin the lower

    land If I forget thee O Jerusalem let my right hand forget her cunning Psalms 137 Thirty five years ago just these lines from the Psalms inspired Arvo Pärt to write the vocal composition An den Wassern zu Babel saßen wir und weinten In 2010 the composer completed its new and extended instrumental version commissioned by the Vale of Glamorgan Festival of Music in Wales Its world première performed by Welsh National Symphony Orchestra under Tõnu Kaljuste s conduction took place on 9 September 2011 at the concert dedicated to Arvo Pärt s 75th birthday at the Millennium Centre in Cardiff Adam s Lament speaks about Adam the forefather of three great religions Judaism Christianity and Islam and the symbolic connecting link between them There are many countries in the world they are becoming increasingly different and this is appalling They are not becoming different in the good but in the bad sense Therefore I wanted to touch upon this point where did things start getting worse Arvo Pärt Adam s Lament was written as a joint commission of two European Capitals of Culture Tallinn 2011 and Istanbul 2010 Its world première took place in Istanbul on 7 June 2010 and the Estonian première in Tallinn on 3 September 2010 both were conducted by Tõnu Kaljuste in Istanbul it was performed with the participation of the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir The second half of the concert includes Mozart s aeonian Requiem The conductor is Daniel Reuss who works as the artistic director and chief conductor of the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir for the fourth season Concert is produced in cooperation with Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir Single ticket 15 10 In its 85th anniversary season ERSO brings to its listeners four exciting series of superb concerts JUBILATE MASTERCLASS SAGA and CONCERTO
