    Orchestra Conductor NEEME JÄRVI The concerts at the Grand Hall of the St Petersburg Philharmonia have always had a particular significance for ERSO Their last concert there was in March 2012 conducted by Andres Mustonen in November 2012 however after more than thirty years ERSO will perform there once again under principal conductor Neeme Järvi The repertoire is anything but modest showcasing Shostakovich s famous Symphony No 5 which premiered triumphantly in the same hall three quarters of a century ago conducted by Yevgeny Mravinsky Mihkel Poll Foto Kaupo Kikkas The young Estonian pianist Mihkel Poll will make his debut in Saint Petersburg Poll who is currently pursuing postgraduate studies at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre and the London Guildhall School of Music and Drama has won Guildhall School s Wigmore Recital Prize this year and played a brilliant debut concert at London s famous Wigmore Hall which judging by the ardent applause from the London audience was a great success Several music critics who were present at the concert praised Poll s courage in selecting a complicated programme and predicted him a great future Silver Tambur Eesti Päevaleht 19 June 2012 In addition to European countries the winner of numerous competitions has also performed successful concerts in New York and Washington Tickets in Tallinn 20 concessions for students and pensioners 15 Concert in Tallinn is produced by ERSO Concert in St Petersburg is produced by St Petersburg Philharmonia Mihkel Poll ERSO s artist in residence 2012 13 Three Estonian piano concertos on the programme this season A Lemba Piano Concerto No 1 in G Major conductor Neeme Järvi 24 26 11 2012 Tulve Piano Concerto conductor Olari Elts premiere 8 02 2013 Tubin Piano Concertino conductor Neeme Järvi 5 04 2013 In its 86th season ERSO brings

    famous fairy tale collection bearing the same name which for Europeans has become a sort of symbol for Arabic literature The beautiful Scheherazade tells her husband the cruel misogynist Sultan Shahryar a magical fairy tale every night each time leaving it unfinished at the most intriguing place so that the Sultan impatiently awaits the conclusion and keeps postponing his decision to have his wife executed One Thousand and One Nights is translated into Estonian by Andres and Ly Ehin The music of the wonderful symphonic suite by Rimsky Korsakov depicts Scheherazade Shahryar the brave sailor Sinbad as well as several other fairy tale characters Alexander Markovich The solo in Rachmaninoff s Piano Concerto No 3 is played by Alexander Markovich who has also performed the Scharwenka Piano Concerto as well as Tchaikovsky s Piano Concerto No 1 in Tallinn this year Tickets 20 concessions for students and pensioners 15 Concert is produced by ERSO In its 86th season ERSO brings to its listeners six concert series P A R I S S Y M P H O N I E S FESTIVO CLASSICS MASTERCLASS 1001 NIGHTS and MAESTRO The concert is part of the 1001 NIGHTS series 30 11 2012

    VÕIGEMAST Estonian National Opera Boys Choir Estonian National Symphony Orchestra Conductor ANU TALI Next to a great forest there lived a poor woodcutter with his wife and two children The boy s name was Hansel and the girl s was Gretel He had but little to eat and once when a great famine came to the land he could no longer provide even their daily bread These are the opening lines of the fairy tale Hansel and Gretel by Jakob and Wilhelm Grimm More than a hundred years ago a German mother wrote a short play based on this story for her children The children performed the play at home and to make the show even more interesting their mother asked her brother to write a few songs for the play The brother was none other than the German composer Engelbert Humperdinck This is how the fairy tale opera Hansel and Gretel was born captivating many generations of children as well as their parents and grandparents Adelheid Wette s text is translated into Estonian by Peeter Volkonski The title roles are performed by Kädy Plaas and Annely Peebo conductor Anu Tali Tickets 20 concessions for students and pensioners 15 Concerts
