    Roots Symphony Estonian premiere ALEKSANDRA SOUMM violin France Estonian National Symphony Orchestra Conductor ARVO VOLMER On February 26 2010 we celebrate the birth centenary of Olav Roots 1910 1974 an Estonian conductor pianist and composer of world renown He was the principal conductor of the Symphony Orchestra of the National Broadcasting Corporation the predecessor of ERSO from 1939 1944 Despite the hard times he achieved the high artistic quality of the orchestra and paid special attention to performing the works of Estonian composers In 1944 he fled to Sweden and in 1952 settled in Colombia In his new homeland he founded the country s first professional symphony orchestra Orquesta Sinfonica de Colombia and was its principal conductor until his death The Estonian audience will have the first opportunity to hear his Symphony created in Colombia in 1967 Film director Katrin Laur is completing a film about Olav Roots Roots a Hundred Years of War and Music for which the concert and its rehearsals will be recorded The soloist in Sibelius Violin Concerto is Alexandra Soumm the winner of the Eurovision Young Musicians Competition in Lucerne in 2004 The repertoire of the Russian born 20 year old violinist already includes several
